Executive Director

Scott joined us in the fall of 2013 after serving as the principal at Tumwater High School. Scott transitioned to our Executive Director in July 2018. 


Responsibilities

  • Manages the association.
  • Strengthens and develops strategic partnerships.
  • Runs the AWSP/WSPEF Boards.
  • Coordinates with our two national associations.

Managing Director, WSPEF

Greg has taken the lead on managing all the components related to the Washington School Principals’ Education Foundation (WSPEF). Prior to AWSP, he worked with activities and ASB since 1992 as a educator and administrator.

Responsibilities

  • Working with all our foundation components: AWSP, AWSL, Cispus Learning Center, Outdoor Schools Washington and other related non-profit duties.
  • Runs the WSPEF Board of Directors.
  • Provides professional learning to principals, advisers and students in the area of ASB Finance and Regulations.

Operations Director

Kim Marquette joined AWSP in August 2014 after working the last 25 years for the Tumwater School District. The last 14 years she worked as the Administrative/Athletic Secretary at Tumwater High School. 


Responsibilities

  • Supports the executive director and manages our master calendar.
  • Supports the AWSP and WSPEF boards.
  • Provides HR support, including maintaining files and contracts, managing benefits, and managing leave.
  • Primary liaison between AWSP and venue staff for conferences and workshops.

Community & Member Relations Coordinator

Julie joined  AWSP in July 2022 after 14 years teaching in the Olympia School District, where she created and fostered a relational community built on trust, respect, and kindness. She enjoys continuing her impact on students by serving amazing administrators and educators across the state.

      • Grade Level Leadership Committee program coordinator and Regional ESD program coordinator
      • Member support
      • Manages Principal of the Year and Assistant Principal of the Year program
      • Assists in workshop registration and professional learning

      Deputy Director

      Jack joined AWSP in July of 2019 after spending 20 years in the Tumwater School District, including 11 years as principal of Peter G. Schmidt Elementary School. Jack has worked at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, as well as central office overseeing district-wide professional learning.

      • Professional learning.
      • Mentor support.
      • Leadership framework and evaluation support.
      • Elementary programs, including Elementary Grade Level Leadership Committee.

      Associate Director (Spokane)

      Scott Friedman joined AWSP in July of 2018 after 25 years as a teacher, coach, school, and district administrator.  He began his educational career at Ridgetop Junior High is Silverdale as a teacher and coach.

      • High school programs, including the Washington Association of Secondary School Principals board.
      • Supports northeast Washington.
      • Professional learning.
      • Interstate collaboration.

      Associate Director
      (Walla Walla)

      Gina is joining AWSP the summer of 2018. She has served in education the past 27 years as a classroom teacher, Middle School Assistant and Lead Principal, as well as an Elementary Principal in the Walla Walla School District.

      Responsibilities 

      • Professional learning.
      • Middle school programs, including Middle Level Grade Level Leadership Committee. 
      • Supports southeast Washington.
      • Mentor support.
      • Interstate collaboration.

      (Inclusion Project Lead)

      Ashley joined AWSP in September as the Inclusion Project Director. She has served in education the past 20 plus years as a special education teacher, K-12 Principal in both rural, urban and international schools.  In addition to her work at AWSP, Ashley is a mentor for new principals and provides administrative support to districts in the Spokane area.

      Responsibilities

      • Liaison between OSPI Inclusionary Practices Project and AWSP.
      • Collaboration and consultation with Nine ESD Regional Coordinators.
      • Coordination/implementation of Inclusionary Practices Pro Learning for school leaders.

      Associate Director (Puget Sound Region)

      Kamrica Ary-Turner joined AWSP in July 2022. She served as an educator in Washington for 14 years, mainly in secondary schools, as a counselor and the last 10 years as a school administrator in ESD 121. She advocates for the whole child with a passion for justice, diversity, equity, and community partnerships.

      Responsibilities

      • Supports the ESD 121 and ESD 189 regions.
      • Member support.
      • Professional learning and mentoring. 
      • Leaders of Color Network.

      Professional Learning & Mentorship Program Coordinator

      Dameon joined the Professional Learning Team in January 2022. He is a 22-year retired Army First Sergeant. Dameon has been a coach and mentor with children for over 20 years and continues to provide support for teens in his spare time.

      • Coordinates and supports professional learning events
      • State-funded Principal Intern Program
      • Leadership Coaching and Mentoring Services 
      • Support all programs through Path LMS and Fonteva management systems
      • Serves as liaison between AWSP and our members

      Government Relations & Advocacy Director

      Roz joined AWSP in June 2017. She is a state Danielson Framework specialist. She came from the Tumwater School District, where she was a Curriculum Supervisor and Professional Development Coordinator.

      Responsibilities

      • Oversees all governmental relations work.
      • Legislation committee.
      • Serves as PAC Executive Secretary. 
      • Writes & oversees production of Legislative Update.

      Digital Media & Experiences Director

      David joined AWSP in December 2013 after working for OSPI, where he worked on education finance and TPEP before the acronym struck fear in educators hearts. He has an amazing wife (who also works at OSPI), one annoying cat, and an adorable daughter. In his free time, you can find him on a tennis court or in line at the Apple store. 

      Responsibilities

      • All forms of digital media, including the website, video production, staff photography, podcasting, Principal Matters, and social media.
      • Managing editor of Washington Principal magazine.
      • Public relations and external communications.
      • Technology roadmap, implementations, and support.
      • Assists with Legislative Update and advocacy, marketing, and professional learning.

      Marketing & Design Director

      Caroline joined AWSP in December 2007 after graduating from Pacific Lutheran University with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design. Caroline's professional experience and background include marketing, content writing, and communications. She has an incredible husband and two bright and hilarious kids who keep her on her toes.

      Responsibilities

      • Directs the design and creative processes for public-facing content and publications, both digital and print.
      • Manages AWSP's brand and style.
      • Edits and produces Principal Matters, Fast Four, Legislative Update, and Building Leaders e-newsletters. 
      • Develops marketing plans and calendar for AWSP professional learning.
      • Leads the distribution of information to members about resources, benefits, and engagement.
      • Oversees business partnerships.
      • Supports the Summer Conference app.

      Assistant Director of Membership, State and Federal Programs

      Macy joined AWSP in March 2015. She has seven years of business experience with an emphasis in marketing and communications. Prior to her work at AWSP, Macy worked in marketing for several companies.

      • Supports principal mentoring and induction. 
      • Manages the state-funded intern grant program.
      • Supports the Professional Learning Advisory Council.

      Finance Director

      Andi joined us in January 2019 after working for 18 years as an auditor and a controller. She has a rich accounting and finance background. In her short time at AWSP, she's worked on cleaning up and simplifying our finances and systems.

      • Processes account payables for the Association of Washington Student Leaders and the Washington State Leadership Academy.
      • Monitors AWSP/WSPEF investments and assets.

      Fiscal Coordinator

      Angela joined AWSP in December 2019 after working 19 years for the Tumwater School District.  She worked in various positions with the district; including Financial Secretary at Tumwater High School, Accounts Payable Specialist and, for the past 8 years, Payroll Coordinator.

      Responsibilities

      • Handles day-to-day bookkeeping.
      • Processes account payables for the Association of Washington Student Leaders and the Washington State Leadership Academy.
      • Monitors AWSP/WSPEF investments and assets.
      • Monitors all contracts and grants.
      • Manages membership and billing.

      AWSL Director

      James joined the AWSL staff in the summer of 2017. James has been a part of the AWSL organization since 2001 since attending camp as a delegate, as has served as a Junior Counselor, Senior Counselor, and Camp Director. James taught band and marching band in the Spokane area.

      • Oversees and directs AWSL, including student voice initiatives and programs 
      • Eastern Washington support 
      • AWSL Program and curriculum writer, facilitator, and keynote speaker

      Chase Buffington

      Cispus Learning Center Director

      Chase first joined the Cispus Learning Center in 2009, serving for two years as its Challenge Course Manager. In 2014, he accepted the position of General Manager, a role in which he helps to staff programs with the right people so all can share in the great outdoors.

      Responsibilities

      • Oversee operations and manages the Granger-Thye special use permit with the Forest Service.
      • Manages finances, marketing, and program deliverables to groups utilizing the physical site.
      • Lead program facilitator and inspector of the Challenge Course and Rock Wall Program.
      • Provides local community engagement, school services, and provides support to Lewis County Public Health and Human Services.
