As another school year begins, I want to remind you of something that can easily get lost among the schedules, staffing challenges, budgets, emails, meetings, and countless decisions demanding your attention:
You are a dealer of HOPE.
Every day, people walk into your school looking to you for signals about what is possible. A student wondering if they belong. A teacher questioning whether they can make a difference. A new staff member trying to find their place. A family hoping someone will see the potential in their child. And sometimes, a colleague who simply needs someone to believe in them.
It starts with YOU.
Hope isn’t pretending everything is perfect. It isn’t ignoring the very real challenges facing our schools or our profession. Hope is the belief that tomorrow can be better than today—and that together, we have the ability to make it so.
As a school leader, you create the conditions for that belief to spread. Every conversation matters. Every interaction matters. Every person matters. When you see people, listen to them, believe in them, and remind them of their purpose, you create hope. And hopeful people create hopeful classrooms, hopeful teams, and ultimately, hope-filled schools.
That’s why our focus at AWSP this year is Creating Hope: A Leadership Journey. Because leadership is a journey. There will be peaks and valleys, victories and setbacks, days when your tank is full and days when you wonder how you’ll possibly keep going. On those days, remember this: You don’t lead alone.
There are thousands of school leaders across Washington walking this journey alongside you—and AWSP will continue working every day to grow, support, sustain, and protect you. So as you walk into your school tomorrow, ask yourself one simple question:
Who needs me to create a little hope today?
Find them.
See them.
Believe in them.
