Frequently Asked Questions About Your Included National Affiliate Membership

Context

AWSP is transitioning from two national affiliate partners to a single unified PK–12+ national association.

For many years, AWSP members have been affiliated with either:

  • The National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), or
  • The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP)

Beginning July 1, 2026, NASSP will transition into the National Principals Association (NPA), a unified PK–12+ national partner, designed to represent school leaders across the full continuum—elementary, middle, and high school. This unified structure ensures that elementary, middle, and high school leaders are represented within a single national organization.

This shift reflects how AWSP already operates in Washington and creates stronger alignment at the national level. AWSP membership will include membership to the National Principals Association.

FAQs

Do I need to renew separately with a national organization?

No. Your AWSP membership includes your national affiliation. Members do not need to take any action.

I received an email from NAESP. What does that mean?

NAESP shared information about continuing membership directly with them. You do not need to take any action unless you choose to pursue a separate individual membership with NAESP in addition to the national affiliate membership (NPA) included with your AWSP membership.

I received an invoice or renewal notice from NAESP. What should I do?

You do not need to take action based on this notice.

AWSP membership remains your primary membership and includes the core services and protections school leaders and districts rely on in Washington.

NAESP is offering optional individual memberships, but this does not replace AWSP membership or the benefits provided through AWSP.

If you have questions, please contact AWSP before taking action.

Will I lose my legal coverage or benefits?

No. Your legal protections and support remain fully intact.

Can I still join NAESP directly if I choose?

Yes. You can buy an individual membership directly from NAESP. However, AWSP membership includes membership to the National Principals Association and remains your primary source of support and protection in Washington. NAESP membership would be optional and separate.

What about elementary and middle-level representation?

Elementary and middle-level leadership remains central to the new national model.

The new structure includes:

  • Recognition programs across all grade levels
  • Elementary and middle-level representation on governance bodies
  • Advisory roles for elementary leaders

Why not keep both national partners?

This shift is about alignment. AWSP operates as a unified PK–12+ association, and a single national partner better reflects that structure and simplifies representation.

Where can I learn more about NPA?

You can learn more about NASSP’s transition to NPA, including a video from CEO Ronn Nozoe, on this web page.
