600,000 NYC students just started this school year with a ban on AI and caps on screen time. Students PreK-8 are banned from using AI in school, and students below fourth grade are banned from using any type of tech.
While I would have been surprised by this last year, this year there is a rising backlash against more than just AI in schools; now there are growing concerns about general technology use, too.
That’s what Jared Cooney Horvath writes about in his recent book, The Digital Delusion: How Technology Harms Our Kids’ Learning — and How to Help Them Thrive Again.
I know school leaders have tough jobs. I started The Main Idea to help make them just a bit easier.
I chose to share this book with you because I think it has what you need to prepare yourself for tough conversations about tech. For some of you, those conversations have already arrived, and for others, they’re coming soon.
These are conversations every school needs to have. Many schools and districts already ban cellphones, so it’s helpful to learn more about the impact of technology on kids and learning in school.
I kept my overview short (it’s just a 3-page BookBit), but here is the book’s Table of Contents in case you want to dive deeper.
Know that the book is not just filled with depressing research on what tech does to our students.
The author shares lots of ideas for what schools (and families!) can do to ensure student learning isn’t impeded by technology.
