Let’s be honest—August comes in hot. Literally and figuratively. The rush of opening a building, finalizing staffing, setting schedules, and preparing for back-to-school events can feel more like survival mode than strategic leadership.
But this is exactly when your design matters most.
Start by zooming out. Ask yourself:
- What kind of culture do I want to co-create with my staff and students?
- What systems will set everyone up for success, clarity, and consistency?
- How will I promote a relentless focus on learning—for students and adults?
And at the center of it all:
- How am I ensuring that equity is embedded in every one of these design decisions?
Equity isn’t a separate pillar—it’s the lens through which we build culture, design systems, and lead learning. It’s how we ensure that our schools work for all students, not just the ones for whom the system was originally
designed.

Start with Leadership Moves, Not Just Logistics
Here are a few design ideas to start strong:
Model the culture you want to build. Share your “why” with staff, invite vulnerability, and honor the excitement (and anxiety) that a new year brings.
Design staff learning with the same care you expect for student learning. Plan your August PD like a teacher would plan the first week of school: with purpose, clarity, and a focus on community.
Make space for joy. The first weeks of school are about connection as much as instruction. Plan moments that are fun, playful, and energizing—for both your staff and students. Laughter builds culture too.
Establish and communicate your systems clearly. Predictable routines free people up to focus on relationships and learning. Think: how will we handle transitions, staff communication, data conversations, or hallway presence?
Walk your building with a leadership lens. Are you visible, approachable, and curious? Instructional presence isn’t about formal observations—it's about being part of the learning.
Ask early, ask often. What’s working? Where are people stuck? Use this feedback to adjust your design in real time.
Lead with Energy, Hope, and Humanity
The best school leaders bring both urgency and grace to the start of the year. They’re clear-eyed about the work ahead and grounded in the belief that schools can be joyful places of growth—for students and adults.
You don’t need to launch every initiative in the first month. You just need to be intentional. Present. Curious. Willing to adjust your blueprint as needed.
