We know principal leadership matters. Let's recognize some of the amazing leadership around the state. Help us find the next Washington State Principal of the Year, as well as our state winners for the National Association of Elementary School Principals and National Association of Secondary School Principals award programs.

Process & Timelines

Process

  1. AWSP accepts nominations from any source. It could be a superintendent, a teacher, another principal in the district, a parent, student, or community member.
We are in the processing of making some changes and updates to the rest of the screening, application, and judging process. This information will be updated by the end of February.

Timelines

  • Nominations open February 2023. Anyone can nominate!
  • We will accept nominations through March.
  • We are updating our process and will post new dates for the process soon.
  • Our Washington State Secondary Principal of the Year winner will complete their application for the NASSP National Principal of the Year by May 2024.
  • Our Washington State Elementary Principal of the Year winner will complete their application for the NAESP National Distinguished Principal by May 2024.


National Recognition


National Association of Elementary School Principals

  • One principal will represent Washington for NAESP's National Distinguished Principal Program (NDP).
  • NAESP honors principals from around the country and does not select a national winner. 
  • Winners are recognized in Washington, D.C. in October 2024.

National Association of Secondary School Principals

  • One principal will represent Washington for NASSP's National Principal of the Year (NPOY).
  • NASSP selects one national winner from the state representatives.
  • State representatives are honored at the National Principals Institute in Washington, D.C., usually in late September/early October. 
  • The National Principal of the Year is selected in October for National Principals Month.
