This is Washington State’s official COVID-19 site, maintained by the state Joint Information Center. It includes daily COVID-19 statistics provided by the Department of Health (DOH). There are resources in multiple languages, a phone number to call with questions about the virus, and all the news from the state in one place.

Gov. Jay Inslee proclamation about essential workers

On March 23, 2020, Governor Inslee issued Proclamation directing all residents immediately to heed current State public health directives to stay home, except as needed to maintain continuity of operations of essential critical infrastructure sectors and additional sectors as the State Public Health Officer may designate as critical to protect health and well-being of all Washingtonians.

School districts should be engaged in contingency planning to prepare for a potential outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) occurring in Washington state. Many regions around the world are experiencing an expanding outbreak of respiratory illness caused by COVID-19.

Resources for Continuous Learning During School Closures

In response to school closures due to COVID-19, OSPI content experts have curated a selection of links to external organizations providing high-quality online educational materials – courses, lessons, videos, physical and outdoor activity suggestions, etc.


This is a difficult and unprecedented time for parents and caregivers across the state. We see you – see you doing the mental and physical gymnastics to navigate a new and unknown time for you and your family. Your valiant efforts may feel like they are unseen or unappreciated, but we know your actions, big and small, to support yourself and your children are invaluable. Days may seem long and arduous or fresh and joyous – either way, we are in this together.

This guide was developed to help you and your family navigate this pandemic and the days to follow.

Teaching Resources

OSPI is partnering with the public televisions across our state. Beginning this week, your local public television station is offering educational programming for students in grades 6 – 12 from 9:00am – 2:00pm daily.  These educational programs (programs like NOVA and The American Experience) have curriculum and discussion guides available for students, teachers, and families. 

To see the programming in your area, go to the WORLD Channel “At-Home Learning” page. At the bottom of the page you’ll see links to the schedule and to the resources for teachers, students, and families.  (To make sure you’re accessing the correct local information, you can set your local station by entering your zip code at the top of the World channel site.)

State Board of Education Updated COVID-19 Information

The State Legislature passed a new law (EHB 2965) supporting the state’s response to the novel coronavirus. This law includes a provision (see Section 10) that allows the State Board of Education to grant an emergency waiver to local education agencies (e.g., school districts, etc.) and private schools. The waiver will provide flexibility so students in the graduating Class of 2020 or earlier who were on track to graduate are not held back by school closures due to the novel coronavirus.

Under the emergency waiver program, public school districts, charter schools, and tribal compact schools will be able to apply to the State Board of Education for a waiver of certain high school graduation requirements. To get the waiver, schools and districts must demonstrate a good faith effort to address core course requirements and credit deficiencies. In addition, the State Board of Education may waive credit-based graduation requirements in addition to school day and instructional hour requirements for private schools.

The State Board of Education is working with partners to review different scenarios and considerations to ensure the program rules effectively support students, schools, and communities. The Board expects to adopt emergency rules by the end of April. Please stay tuned for updates.


District Communication Examples


Due to the current public health crisis, students and families have less access to schools and planning supports. Students can use their time at home to stay on track with college and career planning, financial aid applications, and more.


In order to ensure that you have the support, resources and connections you need during this challenging time, WSSDA will instead host remote weekly regional conversations. The conversations will focus on helping you share with your neighboring districts and WSSDA staff about how you are navigating challenges and creating solutions. You will also receive the latest updates on tools and resources available to you.

Many parts across the world are experiencing an expanding outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel coronavirus. This virus can spread from person-to-person and the number of cases detected in the United States and many other countries is growing.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

CDC is responding to an outbreak of respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus that was first detected in China and which has now been detected in 60 locations internationally, including in the United States. The virus has been named “SARS-CoV-2” and the disease it causes has been named “coronavirus disease 2019” (abbreviated “COVID-19”).

Health officials are currently taking steps to prevent the introduction and spread of COVID-19 into US communities. Schools can play an important role in this effort. Through collaboration and coordination with local health departments, schools can take steps to disseminate information about the disease and its potential transmission within their school community. Schools can prepare to take steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among their students and staff should local health officials identify such a need.

One amazing new addition to the Resources for Teachers on Scholastic's Learn at Home website is the Reach Out and Teach website. This FREE site provides expert advice from our amazing authors on remote learning, independent reading, social-emotional learning and more.


Scholastic Website with FREE Instructional Resources Launching March 13

Scholastic created a site that includes 20 days of instruction for students in grades PreK-9+. The site includes resources by grade buckets that provide cross-curricular learning journeys for students to complete at home. The goal of the site is to provide up to three hours of meaningful learning that students can complete each day, independently or with their families. Scholastic is not asking schools to register or roster students. Each day’s lessons have been carefully curated by our editors in Classroom Magazines.

Just For Kids: A Comic Exploring The New Coronavirus

Based on a radio story by NPR education reporter Cory Turner. He asked some experts what kids might want to know about the new coronavirus discovered in China.
