As the weather warms up and our communities start thinking about summer fun, it's more important than ever to equip our students with essential water safety skills. That’s why we’re excited to share an incredible opportunity from the Washington Recreational Boating Safety Program.

On May 15, schools across the state are invited to participate in Water Safety Day — a special event dedicated to helping K-5 students learn life-saving water safety knowledge. The event includes a free, standards-based, 30-minute lesson plan complete with student engagement activities.

The 2025 education kit emphasizes three key safety messages:

  1. Wear your life jacket.

  2. Be cautious of hazards, especially cold and moving water.

  3. Reach or throw, don’t go when someone is struggling in the water.

Plus, the first 20,000 students to sign up will receive supporting materials, including certificates, stickers, and an adorable Lewis the Frog backpack charm.

Getting your school involved is easy. Just have an administrator register your elementary school here. Once confirmed, teachers will receive a follow-up email to get started.

Let’s work together to keep our students safe and confident around water. Register today and make May 15 a meaningful day of learning and safety!
